Primary Metering Rod Retainer Spring

I'm wondering how critical this part is? I took my Rochester carb apart for cleaning and a rebuild, and this spring is totally bent out of shape. Can I run the carb without it?

I have ordered a new one from E Bay. I did price them out at other dealers, but the shipping was crazy for such a small item. BTW, I'm in Canada.
