2009 T8, tracking down missing water pump blades/fins

Long story, but in short, I messed up. I bought a used boat last year that had mostly sat for a decade with intermittent use. I knew very little about boats. I have since learned a ton (replaced water pumps, rebuilt carbs, replaced props, bay kit, fuel filters, etc). However it didn't occur to...

    BF40A Overheating

As some backstory, this is a 2001 BF40A that I got back in 2023. The boat it was on ended up being scrap and now I've been trying to get this motor running well enough to sell it. I have rebuilt the carb stack, synced the carbs, new thermostat, new lower unit (long story, do your basic...

BF40A - Lower End Nut torque spec?

Thank you! That is just what I needed. I just swapped the shaft over and reassembled. I went with an aftermarket tool. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0849RMMQ4?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_fed_asin_title and https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0849WLQQK?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_fed_asin_title Stupidly solid and...

New BF50a lower unit won't spin in forward or reverse

Yeah, the shipping box is rough. The seller also didn't put anything over the splines of the drive shaft show they stabbed through the box in a bunch of places. Regarding shimming, are you talking about the #20 shims here...

New BF50a lower unit won't spin in forward or reverse

Thanks. The key slot looks fine. In fact it looks like it still has some factory grease on it that is dried out (half green and half white). I'm not sure how the woodruff key could have come off or if Honda just doesn't install it from the factory. Given that this is new old stock who knows what...

New BF50a lower unit won't spin in forward or reverse

Update, I pulled the pump and the woodruff key was not in the impeller and had wedges itself in place.

New BF50a lower unit won't spin in forward or reverse

Just got a new old stock lower unit. Looks to be in near perfect condition. I haven't even installed it yet, but I noticed that the drive shaft absolutely will not spin in forward/neutral/reverse. The prop shaft will spin in neutral but not in forward or reverse. Pulling up or pushing in the...

BF40A - Lower End Nut torque spec?

As some of you probably know from my previous thread, my lower unit is about dead. I found a replacement but it is a 25" shaft version so I need to swap my 20" shaft over. When I reassemble, what is the torque spec for the gear case end nut? #7 at...

Is BF50A XL lower the same as BF50A L lower?

As some of you may know, I'm trying to find a used lower for my BF40A. It's tough because most of them are just as corroded or damaged as mine is. I might have a lead on one for a BF50a which I believe uses the same lower as the BF40a. The one issue is that it is a 25" shaft instead of a 20"...

Remove Honda bf40 prop shaft holder?

Yeah. That's not always the case, but from what I'm learning, this generation of Honda's all had massive corrosion issues with their lower units. I called a marine salvage place an hour away and they normally have everything you could think of and I barely got the words out of my mouth before...

Remove Honda bf40 prop shaft holder?

Welp, she's dead Jim. I got the nut out easily enough. Those cheap Chinese carbide bits worked pretty well. Problem was that the threads were so corroded that after wire wheeling them a bit there were basically no threads left. Also the prop shaft holder itself was massively corroded in place...

Remove Honda bf40 prop shaft holder?

I would like to believe that, but somehow it is going in the left and coming out around the pump on the right. Notice the soaked cardboard. That wasn't like that yesterday. The water pump fiber gaskets are soaked with PB blaster.

Remove Honda bf40 prop shaft holder?

Ugh..... somehow the penetrating oil is leaking out of the water pump. The fiber gaskets are soaked. I can only assume that means the penetrating oil is making it's way down past whatever seals or O rings keep water out of the gears, into the gear housing, then out around the drive shaft seals...

Remove Honda bf40 prop shaft holder?

Thanks, I'll need it. This is more desperation than bravery. No sense in spending $1700 on a whole new lower for a motor that is worth maybe 3 or 3.5 grand tops in good order (correct me if I'm wrong there). I looked for used lowers and they are even uglier than this one.

Remove Honda bf40 prop shaft holder?

Yup, I ordered one of those plus the attachment piece that fits over your prop shaft. $120 is a lot for something I'll only use once or twice, but I'm sure someone will buy it when I'm done.
