I did not when I did mine. I do suggest trying to support it somehow before you disconnect the bottom bracket. I didn't support mine and although I can't say for sure, but I think it damaged my hydraulic steering cylinder from leaning down too far. It may have needed it anyway, but if I had to...
Got the steering ram replaced and the steering system filled back up. Actually got it out on the water this weekend. Everything seems to be running fine (knock on wood).
Well after taking it out twice this weekend, I can't tell enough of a difference on it. I did pre-adjust the trim tab to the other side by a little and it seems to have worked.
Went ahead and did a rough check of the backlash. Seemed to be well within the limits in the manual. I assume I did it right. Got the unit on the motor and gear oil in. Everything seemed to run fine and the water pump was pumping strong. When shifting, everything turned the right way (which is...
Got the unit together (minus water pump). Will probably handle that in the morning, unless I wake up and can't sleep. I wound up using the pinion gear and bearings from the new unit with the old vertical shaft (and new shims). The bearings on that unit's vertical shaft came off without heat and...
Success! I actually looked up how the bearing separator can be used to start the gap between the bearing and the "shelf" on the shaft (just looked up "how to use a bearing separator" on YT. I hadn't thought that I wasn't using it to its full extent. It messed up the shims, but I'm not worried...
I'm in South Carolina. Thanks for the offer, but I'm not done yet. I'm gonna try a few other things. I've just stuck the whole thing in the freezer and will leave it overnight then try and hit the bearing with heat to see if a bigger temperature differential will do it.
Maybe I'm heating it...
Well, heat gun didn't do it. propane torch didn't do it. Went to the point of not being able to touch it with out gloves. For the "persuading", tried the way both manuals say. First used a hammer with a hard plastic end on the end of the shaft into the bearing separator (pushing on the inner...
BTW, on the donor unit, the "needles" in the needle bearing came out.. I'm not planning on using that case (and thus the needle bearing, too), but am wondering if there are any tricks to getting them to stay in place for the new one. I've heard marine grease should help them stick. I do have...
Got some of the tools in and managed to get the vertical shaft out of the donor unit. The lock nut for the shaft came out with no problems at all. I got the pinion gear retaining nut off with just a bit of elbow grease, but the pinion gear would not come off the shaft. Finally put the heat gun...
Thanks for y'all's replies. That's kind of what I was thinking. Just wanted to make sure there wasn't anything else I was missing. I figured the trim tab would need to move back the other way. With the rotation switching, I guess theoretically it could cause the pilot area on starboard to sit...
I purchased a lower unit listed as a RH drive but it turns out the unit is LH. I honestly thought it was RH until I checked it against my old one. The unit is pretty much brand new otherwise, seller said it was one of a pair of spares he obtained as part of a government auction where he was...
Confirmed it is definitely a LH unit. The welding on the shift rod is just how it was made. I noticed the adapter to use the 2006+ gear case on a pre-2006 motor was welded similarly, so I think it is just the way it's made.
I put the donor unit back together and where I was thinking that...
