Hello all,
Have learned a lot from you guys over the past ten years, thank you.
I’ve been running a 15.5x17 Solas 3 blade, it’s been adequate but I top out around 5400, am I over propped? Rarely run wide open, cruise at 3500 to 4000rpm.
Pic for attention

Hi,

I'm certainly no "propping guru" but that sounds almost perfect to me. Particularly when you say absolute top speed isn't something you often want/need.

I do recall reading that the sweet spot of that engine's "power band" is right at 5500 and "experts" (ex-spurts?) recommend 5800 to 6000 rpm for that outboard but I don't remember why exactly.

Top speed is my guess but I'm no spurt either.

Does that little chunk that's missing cause much vibration? Is that maybe why you're considering the replacement or is it the missing 100+ or so rpm....or both?

I imagine that, if you want that extra bit of RPM, reduceing either diameter or pitch slightly would get you there. If I liked the hole shot that 17 got me, I believe I'd try reducing diameter.

I see that there was a 15X17 offered originally but no longer available from Honda. There is a 15.5X 13 listed but that wouldn't give you the "pop" starting out that you're accustomed to.

I see why you're asking though because it's an expensive guess if it doesn't get you what you want. You might want to ask Solas their opinion if you haven't already.

Good luck.

Wide open throttle (WOT) should be 6000 rpm.

I run at 5500 lb. 25-foot cabin 1992 C-Hawk with my 2007 BF 225. My prop is 14.5 X 15. That takes me to 5800 rpm on flat water.

Honda has (had) this link http://marine.honda.com/outboards/performance where you can input engine size, boat type, hull type, etc. and a list of performance tests for various sized boats with the same engine.

Try to find one that is close to the size, weight and type of boat and check to see what prop they are using. That could give you a place to start.
