Need impeller for 70s mercury 9.8 hp outboard

I got my 70s era 9.8 hp Mercury running after 20 years of sitting inside my house. Runs like a champ but is not cooling and is not drawing up water. I think I need a new impeller. The serial number is 2708659. I read it needs to be replaced every two years. Can I just buy several impellers somewhere?

Check for water in the gearcase before ordering parts. I believe your engine is a 1969 (red band), these models had the carbon steel drive shaft that would develop pits in the seal area below the the water pump and cause the gear oil to leak out or let water in. I would pressure test the gearcase to make sure it is not leaking.

There are 2 different impellers that might fit.----Take it apart and see if part ( ends in 80 or 81 ) is on it.----Measure bore of impeller to get the right one---

1969 9.8 had .438" diameter drive shaft.
