    1997 mercury tracker 40hp is not shifting from forward when shifted to neutral nor reverse

    does the shift rod to the lower unit go up and down when you shift from forward to reverse? The shaft starts at the junction under the carburetor and goes down the front of the leg to the lower unit, check to make sure something simple hasn't become disconnected before you assume the worst.

    Impulse fuel pumps always have 3 lines: One to crankcase pressure, here it goes to the transfer port cover (bypass cover, whatever). One to the fuel inlet, the pump sucks from this line. One to the carburetor, it squirts fuel into this line. Hook a tank to the thing, squeeze the primer, and enjoy.

    And don't break it in half! When putting these back together I like to take an old keeper and file it smooth so it goes through the water pump without tearing the o-ring. Also don't forget to put the nut back on before tightening all the lower unit bolts otherwise you get to take them all out...

    It looks just like the second one and i nearly spat coffee at the computer screen when I saw the price. Thanks for the part number, I'll try to poke around and see if I can find it anywhere a bit cheaper. Maybe also call some repair shops and see if they have one.

    Your issue isn't total timing and you won't find a specification anywhere for idle timing as a number, you need to set the timing so the carb starts opening when the roller is between the notches (at least on the older ones). Check the manual for the exact setting.

    Sounds lean; have you taken apart the carburetor to determine if it's clogged up with junk, cleaned the idle circuit etc?

    How is the compression? If it's within 10% between cylinders I'd pretend I never looked and just run it. Worst that happens is you drop a cylinder and run back to shore at reduced speed.

    Black wet plugs means it's been running rich (black) and it currently is running rich (wet). If you've been doing a lot of idle this isn't that surprising however it could help point to your issue.     When you slowly open the throttle does the butterfly in the carburetor start to open when the roller gets between the marks on the cam?     It probably doesn't have an anode, you can buy the little rectangular ones the size of a kit-kat bar and bolt them to the top of your AV plate. Just make sure they have good electrical contact to the metal.
