    Ayuh,..... Not really an answer to yer question, but a cure for yer problem, that worked very well for me,..... I installed a Globe, run dry impeller in my Alpha 1 drive years ago,..... It's still pumping good water, better than 10 years later,.....

    Ayuh,.... It's doable,...... You need the actuator, the pump, 'n brackets for yer motor, 'n the lines, 'n cooler,..... Depending on the space available, pulling the motor, might make the job more reasonable,....

    Ayuh,..... I suggest you skip the bondo filling the dings, 'n just scuff up the existing paint, then repaint it,.... For paint, you can go cheap, 'n use Rustoleum, 'n hardener, or sped bigger money, 'n shoot ot with automotive paint,.... I've had great luck with martin senoir their Prizem...

    Ayuh,...... Chase the wires to see whether the tilt motor is getting power,..... If it is, you'll probably need to pull the tilt motor, 'n clutch to see why it ain't working,...

    Ayuh,..... If you find rotten wood, yes, replace it with new wood,..... Merc transoms need to be 2" minimum, to 2,1/4" maximum,... 'n I find it best, to do all the work, from inside the hull, not cutting the outside apart,...

    Ayuh,.... I hear ya, but you want a custom set-up, rather than the typical off the shelf canvas, so goin' to a custom canvas shop is 'bout yer only option,.... Maybe look further away, in a poorer area,... Or, buy a sewing machine, 'n build yer own,...

    Coupler mismatch

    Ayuh,.... If you pull the flex-plate coupler off the flywheel, the stubby rubber coupler should mount to the same studs that hold the flywheel to the crankshaft,..... If the bolt pattern is different, you bought the wrong vintage motor,..... The crankshaft bolt patten changed in 1986,....
