Hi all new to this Forum, I have used the search function first and cannot find exact same problem as mine in the Honda section. on the water motor started rapid beeping and then died, restarted and same thing, died.. It never started again.. as soon as I turn on the key the normal 2 beeps come on with the lights then the rapid beeps start and wont quit (even while cranking) until I turn the key off. took it home and changed fuel filters (high and low) and cleaned water separator.. no Bueno same thing.. spoke to mechanic at Bucks outboard in sacramento and he said it could be an issue with the kill switch (the red battery light stays on but batteries are good) he says I should bring it in but don't have a opening till 11/8 and crab season starts 11/6.. how would I TEMP bypass kill switch to rule it out as the culprit? any insight would be greatly appreciated. Ed

My kill switches didn't work until I plugged in the wires coming out of the controls to the correct wires in the wiring bundle. So it would seem that all you have to do is unplug yours. It would seem.....but don't quote me.

Well that didn't work.. bypassed the kill switch and no Bueno.. rapid beeps never stop and engine wont fire.. I'm starting to think the water in the fuel from last year sat in the vsp? and corroded and messed up the pump.. Ed

A rapid beep indicates water in the onboard fuel water separator. If you cleaned it, then it's likely the sensor or the float.

First observe whether you have fuel in the separator. I should be at least 1/2 full. If so, observe where the float is - it should be at the bottom. Sometimes they get stuck. If all that checks out, then remove the separator and make sure the float freely moves up and down. I don't have the specs with me, but if you measure the ohms across the two pins on the plug, you'll get 0 ohms when it's right side up, and very high ohms when it's upside down. I may have that backwards. I'm traveling and do not have access to a shop manual.

Ok CHawk.. thanks for your reply.. all you asked has been checked out but what keeps the motor from even firing? my second question would be is the beep also a ignition Block? we had this alarm last year when we got the bad fuel in the marina, but the motor still ran.. strange also is I stand in back of the motor listening and my friend turns on the key,, the pump starts to work (1 second) then stops and the alarm starts..thanks for any help.. Ed

The red battery light (alternator light) will stay on until the engine is running. You can temporarily bypass the kill switch by disconnecting it.

First of all, check all of your fuses.

You may have either a bad connection between the batteries and the engine or you have a bad relay for the programmed fuel injection (PGM-FI.) Testing the PGM-FI is a bit complex. If you have access to the Helm Shop Manual, Chapter 17 gives you the procedure for testing it.

The positive cable coming from the battery has two wires. One goes directly to the starter. The other goes to the PGM-FI relay. Check and clean those connections

Ok Thanks I'll check that relay to the PGM.. already tried disconnecting the kill switch.. both batteries are freshly charged and motor turns over real good.. does not even try to fire.. Ed

Roger that. Honda Dude knows a lot more about the electrical inner workings on these engines than all of the rest of us. However, I understand that a separate wire coming off the battery goes to the main relay, which prevents a voltage drop there and at the ECU while the engine is cranking. If that wire is not making good contact, it may fail to activate the PGM-FI system. That was what I was thinking.

update.. it's running.. Thanks to all who replied.. faulty Kill switch.. thought I bypassed it but nottt.. alarm was still sounding so I took apart the separator and found the float sticking.. all is well.. Ed

Wow guys, that was a good read!
Congratulations edzinda for gettin'er goin' in time for some CRABS!

I'm happy... Learned new stuff.. the float with some crap on the shaft was amazing.. It would catch on this small bump and hang up.. crazy--Ed
