06 Honda 25hp

Happy New Year folks. It's been quite some time since I've been here but I just bought my first Honda outboard. It is supposed to be an 06 25HP. I did a google search for the serial number and the AI says it's a 98 model. I'm hoping someone here can help me out on where I can find out for sure what I have. The tag says BAJL 2000xxx. It's a BF 25A. Any help would be greatly appreciated. This motor needs some TLC so I am sure I will make a nuisance of myself asking all sorts of questions. Thanks for any help.

Does it say it meets 2006 emissions on the cowl? That went on Hondas about 1998 meaning they would meet upcoming 2006 emissions. My 1999 130hp has this label. It leads people to think they are a 2006 model. Follow the serial number guides. If you got an owners manual with it, check the year noted there.

Yes it has that emblem on the top cowling. I think you may be right that the person I bought it from thought that's what year it was. I made the same mistake apparently. And from what I can find on parts sites it's a 98 model. Thanks for the help though.

Hi Karl,

I would go with what boats.net says. They're usually pretty accurate and that's good because it's where you're likely to want to find your parts for that old girl.

They say that VIN number is for a 1998 A model. See link just below:

For comparison, I've attached a page for 1999:

As well as a page for 2006:

I'm a carb guy so I chose the carburetor pages from their catalog.

Note that there's NO listing for A models in 2006. They are all D models. The D model was introduced in 2004 and subsequent.

For further reference, there is NO 25 hp listed for 1997.

The 2006 emissions label that NSDON listed has caught many people out, including me, into falsely thinking that was the year of manufacture. It was only recently that NSDON explained the reality to me and would indicate that sellers of those outboards were mistaken and not trying to be dishonest. They didn't know either unless they were the original owner. Even then, I believe that those labels could have likely misled some of those people if they weren't paying attention or became forgetful over time.

They might be a bit older but I think that the 98 25A outboards are probably great ones if regularly serviced and not abused too much over their life.

Welcome back and hope this helps.

This has been a very helpful explanation. Thank you very much. I'll give the person I bought it from the benefit of the doubt. I doubt there is to much difference between those years. Now I have a better idea on what to look at for parts. Thanks again.

Yes, i don't think the "A" models were changed much year to year.

However, the "D" model carburetors are different and won't work on "A" models. Keep that in mind if you run across an affordable parts motor.

Good luck.
