115hp Mariner steering problem

Hi. l just bought a 1997 19' center console pro sport boat and it came with a 1997 115hp Mariner. It has been sitting for a year. The problem I'm having is with the steering. It wont turn left or right it seems to be frozen. I was able to remove the steering cable so I know that the cable is not frozen. There seems to be something that looks like a "shock" where the cable goes into and the motor is connected to a rod in order to make it turn and I think that is the problem. Can anyone direct me on how to check this part or a website I can get more information? Thanks in advance.

Thanks HAVENTACLUE. Are there any seals I should watch out for? Do I heat the tube itself or am I heating up the housing? I know these might be dumb questions but I just want to make sure Im doing it the right way and not damage anything else.

I did what you said and IT WORKED!!! THANKS AGAIN HAVENTACLUE!!!!!!! Now I have to figure out how to attach the steering cable because the guy I bought it from turned the end of the steering tube where the steering link attaches and the steering cable came off inside the tube. Im thinking either he wasnt supposed to turn that and broke the cable or I just have to push the cable back in and turn the end of the steering tube until it catches the cable. Any ideas with this problem? Thanks again.

I missed your post last night. If the cable is broken, then I'm afraid it's a new cable.Post a couple of pics of your steering system.I'm assuming that you have a teleflex or similar system that runs through the the tilt tube and attached to a steering bar which in turn is bolted to the motor.
Glad to hear the heat worked so quick.I had to spend almost three hours on an old Yamaha, that grease was dry.

Yes its a teleflex system. The piece Im pointing to is the piece the guy was turning and then the cable "came loose". I tried having someone turn the steering wheel until the tube started coming out and I tried turning the end piece to see if the cable would screw back on but it doesnt seem to be catching. The other picture is the other end where it goes inte the tube. I loosen the big nut and pulled it apart but it wont come out all the way so I cant visually see the cable. zpfile002.jpg zpfile001.jpg

If the piece you are pointing to will not retract but does move out a little more, the cable is broken somewhere. It can't be repaired,so I afraid it'll have to be replaced. The cable is probably seized in the tube. The cable is crimped in place just to the left of the eye that your finger is pointing at.Try tapping it out, beating it out ,if that don't work,we're back to the heat. There are plastic bushings in the swivel bracket, but they can take a fair bit of heating.Good luck.

Well it turned out to be a broken cable. It wasnt to bad to do. Just want to thank you again HAVENTACLUE for your assistance. It was greatly appreciated. Thanks for the info too Jeff.
