A friend gave me this old engine recently, and it'll be my winter project. Someone in the past has worked on it and reassembled it incorrectly. There are 4 springs that damped the vibration between the transom mount and the rest of the engine. There are 2 different springs, as noted in the parts diagram for this engine. Two of them are wound with wire approximately .187 dia. and two are about .160 dia. wire. Can anyone tell me which 2 are supposed to be the upper ones and which 2 are the lower position? Thank you.
 
Thank you Fitz. That's one issue resolved. Evidently, this engine has been apart enough over the years that it has several misplaced parts, wrong parts, and ''shade tree'' repairs.
It has a broken detent spring in the lower unit...the one that puts tension on the shift rod.
It had the washer, spring, disk, brass stackup at the top of the drive shaft in the wrong order.
Even had a wood screw holding the bracket on that the cowl thumb screw threads into.

I always thought that was an interesting seal arrangement for the lower crankshaft/block, not sure why a conventional seal design wasn't used.
 
Well-----You have to remember ( 1940 / 1950's )when that seal set-up was designed.-----It works well.----Usually only needs a new 0-ring and gasket.------In my opinion it , along with having to remove the powerhead is brilliant.-----No shift linkage that can go out of adjustment or be assembled wrong.
 
The mechanical seal on the pumps that are on my geothermal HVAC system are very similer. That's probably a testament to the design, as they've been trouble free for over 3 decades. I'd guess that s over 100,000 hours run time.
