I purchased this motor recently to use on my 58 Rich Line Boat. I have 2 wires coming out of the magneto / points that are not attached to anything. I did some quick research and it looks like maybe these went to a kill switch. Question is do I need them connected to start the engine. I want to start working on it this weekend.

Thanks,

So I checked the points and the coil and everything seems to be working properly but no spark. I am thinking I should change the plug wire next. I hear everyone talking about a copper solid core wire with a single strand but I'm having a hard time finding that. I can find copper solid core that has multiple strands. Does it matter? Anything else I can check? I was thinking about completely removing the wire in the picture to see if that might be causing the issue. Any suggestions would be great. Thanks, Glen

So I have the spark fixed and now on to fuel issues. I can get the motor started but it runs really rough and then shuts down. It seems like the compression tank is working as I can see the gas getting pumped into the fuel filter. If I keep pumping it starts dripping out of the carb. I pulled the carb apart and it looks like someone recently rebuilt it or at least cleaned everything. The needle seems to move freely and everything looks good. Any suggestions on what I should check next? On another note what is the attached picture of? I can't seem to find anything about it.

That would be the cutout switch.------Shuts one cylinder down in case of high vacuum ( runaway ) condition.------One wire from magneto goes to it I believe.----Do not remove that switch and throw it away !

Whoever "everyone" is... ignore them. The inner core of the HT plug wire must be either stranded steel or stranded copper wire.

Thanks. That explains the 2 wires in the first picture. One goes to the points on the top cylinder and one goes to the points on the bottom Cylinder. It sounds like I will need to connect the lower cylinder wire to the cutoff switch. Does the upper cylinder points wire connect to a switch that can ground it out?

I'm new to all of this so thanks for the help.
