1957 Evinrude Fastwin 18 Shifting issues.

I rebuilt the lower end because the seals were starting to leak. It still shifts, but now to shift into forward, i need to pull the shift past the notch on the shifter lock spring, then let it slide back into place. it works, but its kind of a pain because it now requires two hands to shift, one to pull out the shifter lock, one to move the shifter past forward position. I really dont want to take the lower end apart again, any ideas as to what caused this?

The connector for the shift rod ----Are BOTH notches on the rods lined up with the hole?----One bolt needs to be taken out before lower comes off.-----Lined up before the screw goes in.-----Those screws are easily damaged during careless work.
