1970 merc 7.5hp phase maker troubles..blowing coils

yep....ive cleaned and made sure of good ground for both coils. Yeah...they are just tucked behind the rubber that covers the coils then up against the coil housing. The 7.5 parts engine i picked up was done the same way. Im really thinkin stator here.
