I would love some advice I picked up a 1973 6hp Johnson for nothing but it has a stuck gear lever if I need to drop the lower how do I go about undoing the linkage nut if the gear selector won’t move
Second issue is that the tiller handle is stuck and doesn’t move at all
All help greatly appreciated

Check gear oil first.-----Is lower unit a rusted mess?-----Powerhead should be removed if shift lever is truly stuck.----And remove flywheel to inspect for cracked coils.----Sounds like the motor has not run in many years !

Thank you for that and if the lower is rusted how do I go about removing it if I cannot select the f gear
And as far as the tiller goes do I just start undoing things till it frees up ?

Any oil in the gearcase ?----Simple nuts and bolts work.-----Remove 4 bolts and see if lower unit will drop down a bit.-----Remove power head and see if you can get shifter freed up.----Salt water motor ??

Is there any trick to removing starter coil without having to rewind it so I can just move it out of the way

For attempting serious repairs such as yours I recommend getting a service manual for reference and view as many videos on YouTube. So many great motor mechanics on YouTube sharing their knowledge.

If you are removing the power head I put a small pair of vise grips on the started cord and cut the knot off. You only lose a half inch of rope.
