1974 Mercury outboard shift linkage question

I have taken the power head off of a 1974 Mercury 115 horse two stroke outboard and replaced a water jacket. I did this with the help of my neighbor. When putting the shift cable back, I seem to have no ability to get have reverse. I have looked for some u tube videos but have not been able to nail down an answer. We did not take the lower unit off but some of the videos refer to removing the lower unit and putting the lower unit in neutral. I really could use some help in locating a instructional video to help me. Any ideas?

Easy way to do this -----Remove lower unit.--Install new water pump impeller !-----Put control in forward.----Have lower unit in forward.------Install lower unit.----Check shift function before install all fasteners.-----Turn propeller when shifting from neutral to reverse.

Thanks I will give that a try.
Ok I have procrastinated trying to fix the problem until now. I have taken the lower unit off and replaced the impeller . I put the throttle in forward but I can not get the spline of the shaft to pass through completely. I believe that the shifter on the lower unit is key but I do not know where to find forward, neutral, etc. Any u tube videos out there?

I have taken this boat to a "marine repair" place that works on older boats. I think this guy is going out of business. I requested that he replace my throttle and shift cables. After I paid him, I took the boat out for test run. When I put the boat in reverse, it went forward and when shifting to forward, it went backwards. I am trying to get ahold of the guy but he is not returning my calls. If I have to fix this myself, what would be the procedure. It is a 1974 Mercury 115 Horse Outboard two stroke.
