1975 Johnson 6HP No Spark

I saw what looked like a pretty nice little Johnson 6hp. Owner told me that him & his buddy were “pretty good mechanics”, but the motor wouldn’t start as there was no spark.
Said they’d put in new sparkplugs, cleaned the carb, new gas, & a clean tank. Repeated pulling broke the start cord, so they also replaced that. Said they were informed if all new ignition was required it was close to $1K.
I told them for the $75 price tag, I’d take a flyer on it. Good luck they said.
Took it home, washed off the dirt, undid a 3/4” nut… as the English say, Cor blimey mate she’s a bloody mystery.
I’m flummoxed as to why they couldn’t get spark.
NOTE : sarcasm often doesn’t come across in the printed word.
