Hello all, new boater, long time tinkerer. I recently picked up a motor and have been working to get it ready for the summer.
Haven’t had a single issue getting her started, but noticed when I brought it out for a test spin, it would bog down when trying to accelerate, leading me to believe it was either a carb or timing issue. Since I had manually opened the carbs when I was running the engine on muffs, and it revved up fine, I was leaning more towards timing.
Brought it home, removed the spark plugs, checked depth of 1st cyl piston and TDC lines up right rhere it should be. This should tell me the key way is at least intact in the flywheel, correct?
I then started following the Joe Reeves method, aiming for 13° (sticker calls for 17°), but I ended up seeing mid-20s. After manually adjusting the timing to where I would read 13°, there is absolutely no way the adjustment screw with the rubber cap can extend that far.
In the first picture, this is the idle position, and timing light lands on TDC (or would I want this to be -4° if TDC is what service manual calls for?). Second picture is with timing arm placed where light flashes at 13°. Third picture shows how far away this is from rubber cap (which is fully extended) (If the third didn’t upload, it’s about 1/2” gap)
