1978 Evinrude 35 HP Lower Seal O-Ring

I am assembling this lower seal unit. I am unable to understand exactly where the o-ring part number 307239 is supposed to go on the bottom of the seal unit. I have replaced the seal and the top o-ring 319662. Does this go between the seal unit and the exhaust housing? It seems to fit there. The item that I am questioning about is item#13 in the drawing.

I also remember reading a thread someplace about a drive shaft o-ring that is often forgotten? Not sure about that as I do not see it.
Thanks!

That is part # 307239, goes between #11 and the exhaust housing. It seems like the drive shaft o-ring is missing from the drawing. #553127 for 1979 models, I believe it goes inside the end of the crankshaft. Dangerous assumption is that 1978 is same.

A quick look at my own parts list shows the same drawing, but I think they goofed it up. 1978 has different crankshafts for 25-35 hp. 25hp has the drive shaft spline o-ring in a groove in the drive shaft, 35hp has the spline o-ring in the end of the crankshaft----which was inadvertently omitted from the drawing. At least that is my take on it. Opinions may vary.

OK I think I found it. I looked inside the end of my crankshaft and see it sitting in a groove right inside the crankshaft spline socket. Sneaky little sucker that took a flashlight to see it. Thanks for the info about the other ring! Much appreciated!

When you install driveshaft, make sure spines are not wearing out. If they are reasonably good, install with good quality grease or anti seize, which will stay in place thanks to subject o-ring.
