1983 johnson 70hp to 1987 90hp v4 swap question

So, purchased a 1987 90hp V4.
I am going to swap this onto my 16" boat.

My question is this.
My boat currently has a 1983 70hp 3 cylinder on it. Is the 90 going to be a plug and play unit?
So, unplug the 70hp red connector from my controls and plug them into the 90? Or is there some wiring that I need to do? (adapter harness)

Look like it is a plug and play swap (same amount of pins in red connector). But wanted to just making sure all will work with no mods.

I think your okay with those years. Controls were changed in later 90's. And both of your motors should use the primer solenoid, a very good system to minimize extra cranking if used properly and understood.

And yes, they both have the primer solenoid. So just gotta understand what that does and how to do it.
I think it holding the key in when starting. Correct?
 
The electric primer is a valve.----Not a pump.----Push key in and hold it in while cranking it over for cold starting.----Fuel is sprayed into the intake air for near instant starting.----This fuel bypasses the carburetor float bowl and metering circuits.----A wonderful item used for about 25 years on 9.9 to 300 HP motors.
 
Swap is done. Lower unit done. No spark situation completed. Carbs redone. Engine fired up perfectly. Took the boat for its initial run this afternoon. I would have to say that the 90 really woke up this boat. Not a massive power increase. But I think that this boat really needed this swap. Boat gets on plane much easier. Perfect timing for summer.

I do have some more question. But I will post in another thread post.
