1985 90 Sometime has no spark

Sometimes you can try to start it and it has zero spark, I opened control box unhooked the kill switch. Fired right up, and did for a while then all of a sudden it quit again. When I unhooked the 2 wires was I suppose to put a jumper in between the 2 it was plugged to?
