i went to remove my prop to fix the dings and dents from rough use for the first time and there was only a plastic nut holding the prop on! no retainer washers, cotter pins or anything else! behind the prop was a thick washer that reads," remove for dis-assembly". slid right off.i have been looking at pics from manuals online and my setup doesnt seem right.am i missing some parts? any thoughts or answers would be greatly appreciated.

Yeah, i'd get a castle nut and cotter pins (have spares on boat), and marine all purpose or auto grease (I've heard of people using regular stuff and maybe i have too without a hitch). But, if you got marine grease and something goes amuck, then you got one less possibility to consider if/when trouble shooting.

In respect to the other parts (washer, etc.) I can't help ya bkuz i'm a newbie aswell, just trying to return the greatly appreciated favors.

Hope this helps

On some of these motors the thrust washer is also the tool to remove the propshaft bearing carrier.----Without a picture I can not tell what you have on yours.

My 86 9.9 (same family) simply has the plastic nut to hold on the prop. It fastens up against a splined spacer that butts to the prop hub.

There is a normal thrust washer behind the prop.

If you think about it, probably 99% of the time the motor is in forward gear which means the prop is (pushing) against the thrust washer between it and the bearing carrier. Without ANY nut on the extreme rear of the propshaft, the prop would probably stay in place quite well (especially if underway).

This plastic nut/spacer combo has worked well for me, on that motor, since it was new 27 years ago. In fact, when the plastic nuts were still available from Merc I changed the metal ones on my 87 and 91 models to the plastic which never "freezes" to the shaft and requires no anti-seize etc..
