1988 wiring harness update to newer?

Back in the beginning of the season I had to replace the engine side wiring harness on my 1988 Johnson 70. Yesterday engine quit and now the red plug from the remote control is toast and it took out my semi new engine side harness as well. I have not started to look for an OMC controller side harness yet but am guessing it is no longer available. Has anyone put a newer remote control and a newer engine side harness (assuming they are available) on an older engine?

It should not be hard to find a used control for a 1988 model 70 HP.-----Gut is your budget allows you can but a newer control and an adapter cablr.

Since both plugs are shot, any downside to hardwiring with butt connectors?

No----Easy to put in a terminal board.
