Hey guys, my 1989 Johnson outboard is having problems. I had fuel delivery problems, so I rebuilt my carburetor. Now, it idles amazing, and can reach high revs in neutral, but sort of with a rapid backfire, but when I go to accelerate in gear, it almost doesn’t want to. It accelerates sometimes, sometimes doesn’t want to and just stays at idle, and then sometimes reaches half speed, and sometimes I can get up to full speed, then in about 15 seconds of full throttle it drops to an idle. Sometimes at neutral it backfires once and dies, which is not very often. Could this be a fuel pump, or a problem with my carb?

Make sure that throttle plate is not opening too early.----Try opening low speed mixture screw 1/8th turn at a time and test.-----Could be an ignition issue with motor losing spark on one cylinder.----Check flywheel key as well.

Make sure your timer base is advancing with the throttle linkage.
