A friend of mine has just purchased a boat with a Suzuki outboard DT40 2 stroke believed to be around 1990. We knew the engine was a non-runner so have been looking it over. Wiring is simple, no electric start, checked the resistance on the coils all seems ok there, but there is no spark. This points us to the CDI/Ignition power unit. We found one on eBay for £245 second hand and new ones for £400 - £500. As it's such a simple engine can we use a separate CDI and separate ignition coils which seem hundreds of £ cheaper? Does anyone know if you can swap the original out for some other CDI and ignition system and if so any recommendations are welcome.
