I ran the engine in shallow water, kicking bottom for an uncomfortable distance. I was surprised that it didn't seem to have any effect. The next outing was pulling a tube at pretty high speed. The engine did ok. I shut down to pull in the tube and drift for a bit.It was about 20 min -a 1/2 hr after shutting down. The engine started and then died.I pulled the cover and the engine was hot.The flywheel was hot, and the port side was much hotter than the starboard.. I ran home on my kicker. I removed the cylinder heads and found a little viscous sludge. I cleaned the heads and blew out the passages in the block with compressed air. I replaced the heads with new gaskets. I took it out for a test run and it overheated again.I did a compression test with results about the same as when I bought the engine 4 yrs ago.Between 90 and 100 psi. I pulled the lower unit to check the water pump. The impeller is like new,but I am changing it anyway. With the lower off, and the thermostats removed, I connected a water hose to the intake tube. I got a trickle of water out of the telltale, but the majority of water came out from the housing.Nothing from the exhaust ports. What am I missing? Should I put the lower on and give it a try, or do I need to pull the power head to find out where the water is going?
