1996 Evinrude 150 V6 60 deg (Looper) tach w/MWS malfunction.
1. Original tach replaced. with Faria (MWS) tach.
2. MWS functioning properly, but no RPM.
3. Replaced the regulator / rectifier. Still no RPM.
4. Following tests performed:
a. Have 12V power at purple (ignition) wire to tach with key on.
b. have continuity in gray (signal) wire from tach to engine harness.
c. Discovered ground fault in gray (signal) wire somewhere between engine harness and tach. Wiring from stator and rectifier to main harness tested OK.
I assume that it's possible to have continuity in the gray wire but still have a ground short. If that's true, then the gray (signal) wire is not providing a proper signal to the tach.
I've checked the obvious connections and discovered no issues. Is there a likely location or junction in the boat (96 Seaswirl Striper 2100 WA) where the ground may be occurring? Given the connections are multi-wire connectors, and that the wire routing is concealed, installing a new gray wire to bypsss the existing gray wire would seem very difficult, if at all possible.
Uncertain how best to proceed to find/ repair the ground fault. Suggestions would be appreciated.
