Prior to replacing my water impeller, do I have to disconnect the shift linkage and remove the trip tab?

That would be an EVIZUKI motor.-----Yes you need to disconnect the shift linkage.----Remove trim tab just in case there is a hidden bolt, I do not believe there is .
