2000 Johnson 90HP ocean pro V4 looper

Hi everyone,

I have a 2000 Johnson 90HP ocean pro V4 looper. The water pump was replaced a year ago and it pees very hard. The motor starts good and idles well. After taking it out and running for about 5 minutes I get an overheat alarm. I have ordered new thermostats but am afraid this is not the issue as the old thermostats open when placed in hot water. What else should I be looking for? I would really like to get this fixed as soon as possible and all the shops around here are 2 weeks out. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You get an alarm.----But is the motor actually running hot ?----You might have a wiring issue or a bad sending unit.---Is boat / lower unit submerged all the time or kept on a trailer ?
 
I believe the motor is actually running hot. Once I get the new thermostats I will confirm that with an infared temp gun. What should the head temps be around 140? The boat is kept on a trailer.
