"Motor ran fine yesterday, this morning went to start and nothing.

kill switch?figured I should ck the switches first

how to test the kill switches, 1 on the tiller and on the side of the engine.

They appear to be both grounded. Is the engine grounded to run or to stop.

sorry no manual on hand and a dealers are a ways away here in the northern Bahamas.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

"Rodney, the switches go to ground to kill the ignition.

You can try unhooking them at the switchbox (black/yellow wire). The diagram below points out what you are looking for.

If that doesn't solve your problem simply try putting in new spark plugs. I work on these engines alot and that is a common issue with them. And yes have seen them run totally fine today and tomorrow you can pull on the rope 100 times and get nothing...

"Hi Graham,
Thanks for the response.

I tested the switches , disconnected the yellow/blk and changed the plugs as suggested. still no spark.

Guess that sort rules out something simple.

any other thoughts?
Seems unlikely that both coils would go bad at once, what about the switch box, is that a item I can test?

Thanks again
Rodney"

"Rodney, if you have an ohm me

"Rodney, if you have an ohm meter (or multi-meter) you can do some basic tests on the trigger and stator.

You should have continuity between the two leads from the trigger (but not from either one individually and ground (any place you can ground on the power head)

Same with the two leads from the stator.

You should have some resistance, but definate continuity.

If after checking either, if there is no continuity or you have continuity between either lead and a ground source, that would indicate that part is bad.

If all of those check out you may have a fried switchbox. It is fairly rare to toast a switchbox on a small Merc, but could be the cause. Unfortunately, the only way to prove the switch box is bad is by proving that everything else is working.

I agree that it is unlikely that you have smoked both the coils..."

"Hi Graham,

the trigger ckd

"Hi Graham,

the trigger ckd out fine tested as you described.
The stator on the other hand did not have continuity between the to wires or between either wire and ground. This indicates the Stator is bad correct?

Now to replace. Can the flywheel be removed without a puller? any tricks to replace and keep the correct timing?

Thank you very much for you help,
Rodney"

"Rodney, until I actually brok

"Rodney, until I actually broke down and bought a proper Merc puller, I used a steering wheel puller and had no issues.

You can remove the stator without affecting the trigger and timing. Just leave the trigger linkage connected and it won't change on you. It won't be in the way of removing the stator.

If you do have a need to remove the trigger for whatever reason, simply unhook the linkage without disturbing the adjustment (easy to do) and upon reassembly it will be fine...

I would try looking for a used stator first before buying new. There is quite a few of them out there. The numbers have changed over the years, but you can use a stator from any 6/8/9.9 or 15 horse model built between 1986 and 2005 - all of them are identical regardless of what the part number says..."

"Hi Graham,

I just want to

"Hi Graham,

I just want to thank you for all your help. You were right on the mark. It was the stator, I managedto find a new one here in the Bahamas and got it back running the same day. did use a wheel puller which worked fine and the flywheel popped right off.

My family and I are on our boat here in the Bahamas and our Dingy is how we get around so its a very big deal when its down.

Thanks again for walking me through the trouble shooting and helping us fix it. Trying to get service is very hard.

Can anyone tell me what wire colors are trigger and what color are exciter coil? 99 marnier 15hp engine code eh. One set of wires are brown and the other set is yellow.

Sorry Brown yellow, brown white and green white, white green. I have nothing on the green wires and wonder if anyone knows if the green wires are exciter or trigger

Ok so my exciter coil tested bad and I ordered a replacement. After waiting a few days on the replacement coil the old one started testing good again. Could this be because of temperature change cause the coil to test good again? Any ideas guys? And also want to show ya all what the trigger coil looked like and if it's normal or if it should be replaced also. The trigger coil has some kinda white powder like stuff coming out of it where the wires go into it. Any thoughts?

Trigger coil and should I replace it and has anyone tried the cheap unbranded trigger coils?

Check the grounds for your trigger too that can effect the performance. Triggers (or other types of coils) often fail, then work for a little bit then fail again, it’s far better to just replace it.

I have a 2001 15 hp EH Mercury not getting fire ckd the 3 coil windings and the red and black stator I presume and both ckd ok what else could be the problem.. I also have white stuff where the wiring goes into the trigger
