I’ve taken the boat to several mechanics and still have the same issue they’ve adjusted the shift cable. While in neutral it clicks but if you pull the lever slightly back the click goes away I would appreciate any advice

Adjust shift cable at the motor.-----Before you ask if you go one way it might get worse.----Then adjust the other way.

Hi,
It sounds to me like the clutch dog ears aren't completely clearing the forward bevel gear when neutral is selected. You might be able to lengthen the shift shaft slightly and bias the adjustment toward reverse to correct this. I haven't adjusted a 50 but it looks to be very similar to other models.

Locate where the shift shaft exits the gear case to find the adjustment nut or "joint" (item 11 in the link below).

It will probably be easier to access when the transmission is in reverse.

Always rotate the prop and or propshaft when shifting the transmission with the engine stopped (dry shifting) to avoid getting the transmission "gear bound" as that might bend the shift shaft.

Loosen the jam nut (item 39) and turn the adjustment nut clockwise "just a hair" to lengthen the shaft slightly. Tighten the jam nut and shift to neutral and see if the clicking is gone. If not then you can shift back into reverse (remember to turn the prop) and try lengthening the rod a bit more.

Keep track of how far you've turned the adjustment nut so that you can return to where you started if my idea doesn't work.

If you can get the clicking to go away in neutral you will still need to check to make sure that the transmission shifts solidly and reliably into both forward and reverse before considering the job done. Always remember to turn the prop when "dry shifting". This means that you will need a helper unless it's a tiller model.

Good luck.
