2003 honda bf225 leaking oil when tilted up

I have a 2003 bf225, I was installing an automatic drain plug and in the process put the engine in gear to check clearance on my drain plug switch. I left it in gear while drilling and fitting the switch, and when I got to the rear of the boat noticed oil leaking out pretty good. Motor was tilted up in transom saver and I just assumed something crapped out on me. Upon further inspection noticed oil was coming from the shaft towards front of lower unit that runs up to the motor, assume its probably the shift shaft. Lowering the motor caused it to stop, also noticed when it was taken out of gear I could tilt up with no leak. My question is, is this normal or do I have a problem. Thanks for your help guys ?

You have a leaking shift seal on the under side of the mount case, yes you have a problem. This necessitates removal of the mount case to replace the seal, so power head off.Whilst you're at it change the top shift shaft seal too

I was afraid of that, its been running fine and and when I narrowed leak down to being tilted up and in foward gear I was hoping that was normal. Sounds like a big job right in the middle of the season, bummer might be out of commission for quite some time. Thanks for your help
