2005 225 Tilt/Trim issues

I picked up a 2005 225 and am having some issues with the Tilt/Trim.

1st issue I have is that whenever the key is on the tilt/trim motor spins. When I got the engine the shop that pulled it off had just cut the wiring harness inside the engine compartment I spliced each of those wires soldering and heat-shrinking each individually. There is no short at the splice points. I just unplugged the round plug with large green and blue that is in the front of the engine and that keeps the tilt/trim motor from spinning when the hey is turned on. Anyone have any educated thoughts as to what would be causing that?

When I got it on the stand it would trim part of the way up then stop. PO said it was leaking between the reservoir and the cylinders so I replaced that and refilled with some AT fluid. She trimmed all the way up no problem. When trimming down a bunch of fluid leaked out of the fill point. I took a look at the parts diagram and found that there is supposed to be an O-ring in that cap so I got a new cap and O-ring and refilled the reservoir. Now it will not trim up at all. Anyone have any educated thoughts as to what would be causing that?

Remember that you have limit switches for your tilt trim.
Those maybe confusing you as to the partial trim observation.
Also, fill the tilt Res. When the unit is fully up, not down.

The motor running with the key on means that the tilt motor is shorted to ignition power.

I would go back and re-examine those cut wires ONE MO TIME.

Also, Honda likes to route wires close to each other and connect them with bullet type plugs. It can be easy to mix them up and cross the wires if someone has been unplugging those connections for some reason.

You NEED to find that problem and correct it because that is a DANGEROUS condition.

As to the trim not moving after what sounds like significant fluid loss....
..... I think it's probably due to air getting entrained in the system.

BUT FIRST....make sure that the MANUAL VALVE is tightly seated.

I've rebuilt some of these trim units and can tell you that, once there's air in the system, it can be very difficult to purge.

Keep working it and adding fluid as needed to get the air out.

At first, use the manual valve to raise the engine then close it and power the system down. Try that several times before trying to power the trim up.

If that doesn't help, then either the fluid you used is not compatible or the hydraulic system has an internal leak

Good luck with it.
