2005 Mercury 50 HP 2-Stroke tilt/trim issue

Hi,
I have a 2005 Mercury 50 HP 2-Stroke (1B097695). The tilt/trim works in neutral and at low speed, as well as on land at the house. However, when I increase the speed, the motor goes down to a lower position, and when I press the trim button, the tilt and trim do not work.
Any thoughts?? Thanks.

Hi, This is not the safety mechanism. When I give full throttle, the boat motor does not hold the set angle and falls to the lowest point, making it impossible to get on plane.
 
I have the same issue with my mercury 115 efi. Trying to figure out if the problem is in the trim motor or the cylinder. Has anyone provided any help?

At any speed, the trim cylinder should resist the force from the prop's thrust and if it can't, you have a bad seal- if your trim motor runs but the pump can't raise the motor, it points to this problem. If you have a ratchet strap (fairly heavy, but you don't need to test it for a long time), loop it around the lower gearcase and the trailer cross member, then try to raise the motor. If it doesn't seem to want to, I would suspect the seal.

You checked the fluid level in the reservoir, right?

If you don't use the support for the motor when it sits on the trailer (at home or wherever it sits when not being used), does the motor drop after sitting? That's another indication of a bad seal or low fluid level.

Hi Jimn,
Thank you very much for the advice. I have already sold the boat to my buddy, who is only interested in the hull. He plans to change the motor to a new one.

My fluid level is fine. Are you referring to a seal inside the cylinder? I have pulled the pump and opened it and checked for any obvious o’ring issue but have not opened the cylinder. Not sure how easy it is to replace seals in the cylinder.
