2006 40HP Yamaha 4 Stroke = Engine Noise when Starting

Hi,
The above motor has done 400 hours and has run like a dream until 12 months ago, it intermittently started to make a whirring/high pitched squeal when I started the motor. I would immediately turn off the motor, even though it was running perfectly and water pump operating with a steady powerful stream, except for the bloody noise. Sometimes the above would reoccur on the second attempt to start the motor or otherwise start without any further problems. The motor would then operate normally for a full days fishing with at least 6 more uneventful "start ups". The problem only seems to occur if I don't start the motor for several days. I took the boat to 2 independent marine mechanics and would you believe, it didn't make the noise on either examination and both stated the motor was operating perfectly. I think they both thought I was nuts. The latter mechanic was the head mechanic at the Yamaha dealer where I purchased the motor new. Even though he stated he couldn't hear a noise or find anything wrong with the timing belt etc. he still chose to replace the timing belt, water pump and completed the full service at a cost of over $700. The problem appeared resolved until about a month ago when the same noise occurred again on starting the motor and going away after the second or third start. It is still happening intermittently!!! please help me boys, because I think I will go nuts if I don't solve this problem.

Check your starter bendix. Make sure it is lubed. Does the whirring coincide with the engine not cranking? Check your battery health and for no loss to the starter.

Hi hondamech. The bendix. spring mechanism and solenoid etc all appears to operate correctly throughout the starting process. I have greased the spring and have particularly checked it out each time with the flywheel cover removed and the parts exposed. The whirring/high pitched squeal is still happening each time I attempt to start the motor after not starting it for about 3 or 4 days. I use the boat at least twice a week. The motor always starts on the first turn of the ignition key (after priming the fuel) however the whirring either starts immediately/or after two or three seconds/ or after engaging the gears. I have never allowed the whirring to continue for fear of causing some damage and each time it happens I turn off the motor and then restart it. Sometimes it happens again and sometimes it doesn't and I then travel out to the fishing grounds with no further problems for the day. As I have said previously, the motor appears to run perfectly even when the noise is happening, that is, water pump etc. The battery is only two years old and appears to be in perfect working order. I don't understand what you mean by "for no loss to the starter". This noise is probably more aggravating than anything else but it's a real worry when I can't identlfy the source of the problem. Your assistance is much appreciated,

Regards,

Paul
