2006 DF 90 won’t fire

2006 DF90 won’t fire. Engine cranks but does hesitate unless you hold on the key and let it push through, then it just cranks and cranks and cranks with no fire. You will hear an occasional back fire like she’s trying to start.
This started when I was running wide open and then the engine cut off immediately with no prior symptoms. After that, it hasn’t restarted since-had to get a tow home.
Replaced quick connect to gas tank and primer bulb before taking it to the shop.
The engine is currently at the mechanic and he has tested spark plugs, fuel pumps, and coil packs. He said he is checking the fly wheel for issues next, then moving onto the timing chain if nothing is found there.
I wanted to see if anyone has had a similar experience, before I throw thousands into trying diagnose a 2006 engine.
Any insight is appreciated.

Thank you. No loss of power to the trim function, just won’t fire off. I will pass this along to the mechanic. Hopefully he will check the most obvious things before tearing everything down.

The 4 strokes run nice / quiet / economical.-----BUT---Proof that 4 strokes can be expensive to repair.---Some even say that they are now becoming a " throw it away " item.

Sounds like a rip off. Injectors can be serviced and after market fuel pump and regulator a couple of hundred
I agree with that. I cleaned injectors, cleaned VST, replaced aftermarket pump inside, vst gasket, regulator, high pressure and low pressure filters with ebay parts, and few hours of my time for less than $150 on a '04 40hp Evinrude (df40) 4 years ago and still running strong. $5k is nuts!!
