2010 BF150a oil pressure light flickering

Hi all, I have a 2010 bf150. I've had an over heating problem, and finally fixed it. Now I have a oil pressure problem 🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️ I can cruise around at 3500-3800rpm and all is good. As soon as I go higher rpm my green oil pressure light starts to flicker, then goes out and I get the oil alarm and it goes into limp mode. I stop the engine and start it up again and it runs. Is the oil pump an issue with these motors? Or maybe the oil pressure switch??

To add to it, when I was heading back in after the test run, the motor was losing rpm/speed even when pushing more throttle. Then would fully cut out, then wouldn't start, like it was a dead battery. But 4-5 times later it would start and and run very rough. Then stall again after a min or so. I've since got it home and run it up again with the oil pressure switch unplugged and it starts and runs fine, but the engine does sound a little noisy now, or i just didnt notice it was noisy prior. Voltage at idle is 14.4v. I've just bought new oil and oil filter to change tomorrow as well as an oil pressure gauge kit to test pressures. Does anyone have the specs for pressures at all??

Hi,

Sorry you're having problems. This does not sound good at all.

Looking back at your original post, the oil light has been flickering for a while now.

While I agree with checking oil pressure (sorry, no specs), I would also want to carefully cut the top of the oil filter off and roll out the paper media.

If you see "glitter" in there then you can probably bet that has spread throughout the passages. If so, I think you know what that means.

Sorry for the glum take on this but reality helps with making your best decisions about how to proceed.

Good luck.

Thanks for your reply 🤘 so after doing an oil and filter change today, I also done an oil pressure check. And guess what!! No oil pressure 🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️ I even ran the engine with the oil pressure switch out and covered the outlet with my finger with very little oil or pressure coming out. So now I'm looking at getting this motor stripped down and see how much damage there is, and see if it's worth a rebuild 🥺🥺 is there anything I should replace or look for once it's apart? Or should I just bin it and find a new motor? Worst part is that I bought this motor for 7k 2years ago to fit to my project boat that I've not had time to work on due to work. So I'd like to fix rather than bin it as 7k is a bit of money to just waste. Thanks for your time 👍

There are others here that will probably give you better answers. I have no experience with that engine.

All I can say is that, IMO, it would be a daunting task for most novice or DIY mechanics to bring one of those "back".

It is a balance shaft engine that contains more bearings, seals, and precision components than a "conventional" block does and the repeated operation with no oil pressure will have likely caused significant damage in that area as well as the crankshaft and camshafts.

Extreme care in observation, assessment, procedures and measurements would be needed to rebuild one of these in anything approaching an economical manner even in a well equipped, knowledgeable repair facility.

Bottom line for me is that I wouldn't try it.

Wish I could have given you a more positive outlook but that's how I honestly see this.

Sorry this happened.

Specs on oil pressure test on page 2-34 in shop manual 21psi at 2000rpm taken from removed oil pressure switch location.
If no oil pressure try replacing the oil pump, its bolt on and can be had from ebay.

Agree with opening up and inspecting oil filter if metal flake is seen. Could be from pump itself or pull valve cover and see if cams worn, rockers, valve train are the issue as anything in that area or under the chain case cover is a fairly easy fix and parts on ebay.

Agree repairing the short block on this engine might be economically unfeasible.

Hi all, so after taking the motor to my old boat shop, they concluded that the engine had no oil pressure and had heat binded when I was out last. I've since been in contact with the guy I purchased the motor from and he has refunded my money. It's been a massive headache, but also a learning curve. Cheers all 🤘

Well, in my experience getting a full refund for a used anything that has failed like that is pretty unusual.

But, it appears that the seller must have known there was a problem and is honest enough to admit it.

Glad this worked out financially for you even if costing you time and headache.

Thanks very much for the update.
