228 Sterndrive - shift cable installation - 2" thread

Good evening - long story short = I am installing the shift cable - how critical is the 2 thread position of the brass fitting to the bell housing
I cannot connect the brass fitting without making it firm and tight - not too tight - with the shift slide i full forward position the lever and slide barley contact

no more than 2 threads showing or else reverse will be compromised
If you mean when in fwd gear the roller arm and slide are a bit sloppy, that is normal .once inside the shift cavity it all holds together

The threaded hole had to be re tapped. - The new threads are not best - will tightening the brass fitting cause a problem ( not allowing one or threads)
If I go with 1 to 2 inches the brass fitting is a tiny bit loose
