228 Sterndrive - Shift cable ????

Good Afternoon - Prior to starting this adventure I contacted Mercury Marine in order to get the correct part number for the shift cable kit. I was told that there was a new part number so I bought it.

This cable is not the same as the one .- The brass ftg at the shift plate is larger/longer, therefore it does not rout the same. (not close)The inner wire cables are the same length. I was not able to measure the old housing as I destroyed it.
My question is - do i try and make this shift cable fit - new route/path - all proper cable adjustments - or do l need to try and find a new old one.

see if you were given the correct part number. That will take you to all the parts for your engine or drive . Would think shift cable is with the drive.

Given the age you may also be working with a mismatch of parts.

It really helps to tell everyone WHAT your working on.If you have a old one with forward entry and the new one is aft entry you need the special tap to correctly install it.

My situation is installing the new shift cable assembly - the old housing does not match the new one, the difference is the brass fitting at the end of housing that connects to the shift plate. it is an inch longer. This prevents the new cable from using the same route to the shift plate. l did not know if this was a problem.

l now have cable routed to the plate - it is not the same path but it seems to operate properly. I have been watching Youtube videos and I just realized that they are all Alpha - one and two -who have fixed routes or paths - l am pre-alpha
I should have contacted Mercury Marine directly regarding these issues that I am having - This is on the job training. It is because I cannot find A Mercruiser dealer who wants the work - They don't work on old sterndrives.

you need Manual 2
