50hp Force Driveshaft spline seal retainer problem

"Attempting to replace the water pump impeller and seals. Removed lower unit and noted the upper drive shaft spline seal and retainer stuck to the drive shaft. Is this normal and what is the proper way to remove the retainer, to allow replacing the impeller? CAN SOMEONE HELP?"

I just ran into the same problem. May not be the right way but I used a large crescent wrench adjusted a little more than the driveshaft diameter and used a hammer and tapped it up and off. From reading about this I found that the retainer should be replaced to 1-7/8” from the top of the driveshaft to the top of the retainer and then pack the spline seal with marine grease as well as a little bit on the spline. The spline seal should rest on the retainer. Hope this helps you. I also read that neither one is absolutely necessary
