I have a 2000 J50PLSSM and I rebuilt the carbs last year and went to start it and it will run for about 2-3 seconds and then dies. I set the floats even with the carb bodies but I seem to have alot of fuel sitting in the carb oriface. I checked compression last night and have 130psi is each cylinder(cylinders were cold). Pulled the plugs and they seem to be very wet looking. We drained the bowls and put in fresh gas before starting.

Should I readjust the floats or is something else wrong?

Thanks

"Did you manually clean the brass high speed jets that are located in the bottom center portion of the float chamber? If not, and you're not absolutely sure that they are perfectly clean, do so.

With the spark plugs removed, do you have spark on all cylinders that will jump a 7/16" gap with a strong blue lightning like flame... a real SNAP!

With the carburetor body held upside down, the float being viewed from the side, adjust the float so that the free end of the float (the end opposite the hinge pin) is ever so slightly higher (just ever so slightly off level) than the other end. And when viewed from the end, make sure it is not cocked.

When time permits, visit my store at: http://stores.ebay.com/Evinrude-Johnson-Outboard-Parts-etc?refid=store

Let us know about the jets and spark etc."

"I think you mean the small round jets, I took them out and just checked to make sure they were not clogged.

I'll check the plugs tonight and readjust the float as well.

Thanks, I'll report what I find.

"Brian,
I am having the exact same problem you are except I have a 1975 50 Johnson, I got from a friend for next to nothing. It was sitting for years. When I took the carbs apart they were full of heavy brown gunk in the bottom and the ports. I cleaned the bowl with carb cleaner and thought I got it pretty clean. Now it starts runs for a minute and dies. I'll be interested to see what works for you. I'm going to take the carbs apart and try cleaning them again tomorrow. Let you know if I find something that works. I'm wondering if maybe it's the fuel pump."

"fred, try pumping the primer bulb and see if it continues to run..if so,bad f pump,if not, back into carbs."

The primer bulb didn't do

The primer bulb didn't do it. The needles are sticking. I'm going to get a couple of carb rebuilding kits and try it again. Let you know if it works.

"Well I rebuilt the carb's

"Well I rebuilt the carb's mostly, I didn't replace everthing in the kit. I replaced the needle seat, needles, floats and gaskets and blew it out the best I could. Still acts the same. Starts, runs for 20 to 30 seconds and dies, unless I hold the throtle cam down a little then it runs until I let off the gas and dies. Any ideas?"

This just proves that most &#3

This just proves that most " carburetor trouble " turns out to be something else.So what is the compression and do you have spark that will jump a gap of 7/16" or better. Hook up a timing light and monitor spark while the engine is running. Trouble shooting is the name of the game.

At what RPM is the engine tryi

At what RPM is the engine trying to idle? It is possible that you have the idle set too low. I believe it should idle at 800 RPM in gear and slightly higher out of gear. Also how old is your fuel? Was it stored properly? If you question the fuel source try a portable fuel cell. Will the engine open WOT on the water? Have you adjusted the RPM on a stand then had it die in the water?

If all is fine then do as ikia says and start looking over the spark.

sounds like you just need to i

sounds like you just need to increase idle speed to me.unless u r running on one cylinder.

Well I turned the idle screws

Well I turned the idle screws all the way in and backed them out 1 and 3/4 turns and that did the trick. I took to the lake and it ran fine for 2 hours. I still need to adjust the idle a little. It stall when the idle is all the way down. Thanks to everone for your help!!!!!
