50hp vro2 bypassed and need fuel pump info

Hey guys, I'm at Ky Lake trying to catch some crappie. First time out with this boat, which has a 1989 50 Johnson. The vro2 was bypassed prior to me acquiring the boat. Engine ran fine in a barrel of water, but not so well now. It will starve for fuel if I try to run much above idle, but will run up to full throttle if the fuel line prime bulb is frequently squeezed. I'm guessing fuel pump.
Which pump is the frequently used one to replace the BRO pump when it has been bypassed, or is there a rebuild kit for this pump....minus the oil injection side. Thanks big time for info or part numbers.

Find the fuel pump for the 48 hp model like yours.-----It mounts on the port side of the motor , top cylinder.

^^^^ This is what RacerOne is talking about ^^^^

Since you're at the lake, check the simple things first. Do you have a fuel restriction anywhere between the fuel tank and and the engine? Do you have a good primer bulb or a cheap one? Are you sure all hose fittings are secure or do you possibly have a leak somewhere?

It's totally possible you have a bad fuel pump. But, all those things I listed are free to check first. If all those are good then check into the pump.

I did find new end fittings to go on the fuel line.....tank to engine. Couldn't find the whole line for omc/Joh son. I'm sure someplace around here had one but settled for swapping out the fittings. No improvement. No leaks anywhere that I could see. I had already decided that I should change the vro2 fuel pump for no other reason than to "clean up" under the Cowell. Now I have another reason. Headed home in the morning. I need to get it changed over and proved out, then try to make it back down here in the next two weeks. Was a little early this year for the crappie but should be prime in a week and a half or so.
Thanks for the Info guys.

Order the pump I showed in the link above and it should be a direct fit on your engine. If you're not going to use the VRO it makes sense to eliminate potential points of failure.

You don't have to use OMC (BRP) fuel line. Any 5/16" ID USCG rated fuel line will work just fine. The key is to use marine grade fuel hose meeting SAE J1527 specs. Higher HP motors require 3/8" ID hose, but I think the 50HP motor uses 5/16".

Here is a great explanation of marine fuel delivery systems and why marine grade fuel hose is different.

Kevin, thank you for the Info. I'll put it to good use. There's nothing more aggravating than trouble on the water, so I'll eliminate potential problems while on land. Thanks again guys for the help.

A follow up to my situation. Took the VRO pump apart and the diaphragm on the pulse side had numerous cracks in it, with gas on both sides of the diaphragm. Old style pump soon to be here. That should take care of my problem. I'll let you guys know, and again Thanks for the help.
