That is for the reverse lock.------And turn it one way and you can not tilt the motor.-----Turn it the other way and you can tilt the motor.-----And a " new to you motor needs a new water pump impeller.

Thanks... that was quick.. much appreciated.. I will have to try to turn it .. gently..
and yea a new impeller is on the list.. thanks..

No need to turn it gently.----Jusrt flip it over.-----I encourage you to find an owners manual for this fine motor.----Mistakes can be expensive.

Thanks.. yea it's plastic and has a lot of give to it.. and as I cannot see what it is moving I will wait till I find a owners manual.. easier said than done for a 1987,,,I am looking on Ebay .. The SEALOC manuals that this site sells probably are a bit too generic to be of much use...
thanks

Oh boy... well racer one you made a big mistake ... you ASS-U-ME..Ed that I knew what I was doing.. total gringo here and here is my story and I am sticking to it.. .
This new to me outboard has not been on my boat yet.. I am waiting for the one part that was missing when I purchased it.. ONE 1 part.. and not a high tech part at that... the THRUST ROD-TRIM ROD.. that goes Thur the mounting bracket to set the angle of attack... well.. guess.. well you don't have to guess cuz you KNOW.. that the little LEVER of my frustrations grabs onto the tilt-trim-thrust rod... so not having the rod, it does nothing !!!.. just sits there very stiff to turn.. ,, I put a 1/4-20 long bolt thru there temporarily and all is good..
thanks for your wisdom and PATIENCE... much appreciated..

Good luck with your motor.-----No surprise to me when folks try to figure these motors out.----I can not see or touch your motor.-----Your pictures did not show the missing thrust rod !!!

I have some small -----MARTIN------Outboard motors.-----They have a knob between the transom clamps.----Turning that knob adjusts the trim angle.-------Can't recall seeing this feature on any other small outboards.

I have several motors with that mechanism. The knob should not be hard to turn…clean & lube the appropriate parts. If it is very stiff, you eventually will break the plastic part.
Recommend leaving it in the tilt position.
That way, when you hit something, the motor will tilt up. The only thing it does is lock the motor down, so it cannot come up in reverse. As long as you don’t grab a fistful of throttle, it won’t come up in reverse anyway.
