78 115hp Evinrude thermostat location

Hi all. I’m thinking I am having problems with my engine getting to hot. Took it out this weekend. Warmed it up and went to my fishing spot 5 minutes away. Took off the cover too look for fuel leaks as I could see fuel in the water and when I touched the cylinder housing it was extremely hot. Got a first degree burn on my hand from it. There is water coming Out of the tell tail but after looking on YouTube that doesn’t always mean the engine is being cooled. YouTube says I should investigate the thermostats to be sure they are not stuck closed. My problem is I can’t find them on any service manuals. Only one I was-able to find says they are at the bottom near the back and I’ll need to take off the shroud too get them out... is this true for my model? 87 115hp Evinrude.
Thanks

Nope-----You need to look lower on the EXHAUST HOUSING on your motor.-----There should be no need to remove the lower cowling either.

Thank you. Found it. It’s right where YouTube said it would be. Blah. How do you recommend me takin it out? I’ve seen YouTube comments saying you don’t need to cut the cowling. Just take out the top 2 bolts and then bring out the bottom two until you can’t anymore then just move the housing down the screws that are still in there homes. Is there going to be enough room to remove the thermostat? Do I need to replace any gaskets when I do this? Will those gaskets be a pain if I do end up needing to replace them? Should I bring the dremole just in case? Hahahaha.
Also. The reason I though the thermostat was on top was becuase there is a bolt called the thermostat housing bolt and it is number 43 on that parts list. But yes, I’ve found the actual.

Hahahaha-----Just another example of mistakes found on parts listings.-----And if you do not know that it is a mistake then----I consider changing out those thermostats to be a simple job !!!

Do you think there’s a possability the water chambers are plugged? I’m assuming the thermostat is stuck open on one side and Esther working properly or not at all on the other as the tell tail is pissing water... what’s your thoughts?

The water that comes out the tell tale did not go through the engine block !!!---Thermostats have nothing to do with the " pisser " at all.------You really need to invest a few pennies in a factory manual.----Working the way you are will lead to expensive mistakes , and sorry for being so blunt

Being blunt? You have not given me a strait answer since I joined the forum. What’s the forum for? Yet you say I should get a Manual for it. FYI, I have one. I’ve said this countless times but YOU seem to overlook this and assume I do not. Then give me half ass answers to the actual questions I’m asking. My manual does not go over the thermostat or it’s location or else I would not be askin these questions and I would not be going into YouTube to find where it is. What next, your gonna say I should invest in multiple manuals? Hahahaha
that’s what this forum is for. To help those who are stuck. And how do you figure “working the way your are will lead to expensive MISTAKES”? I’m pretty sure I’m doing everything correct and as close to step by step as it gets besides spending money on tools too test compressions and voltages. I’ve addressed each issue and all are fixed. Did not notice the hot heads until the last outting. So what’s your problem with me?

Pile ON!!!!

No, seriously. Clymer and Seloc manuals are not worth the paper they are printed on, especially for a beginner.

See if you can find an Evinrude/Johnson service manual on Ebay. The part number for the manual is unfortunately not showing on the parts list website,
which you should also know: shop2.evinrude.com . There are 4 on Ebay right now.

Basically all these V4 crossflow engines are the same. There are minor differences from year to year, but the basics are the same.

Changing out the thermostats on that engine (bubbleback guys?) is a PITA.

What’s a PITA? And what’s (bubbleback guys) mean?

OK I tried.
Seriously?? You tried? None of what you wrote makes sense too me. Making me feel stupid is ignorant. Did I join the wrong forum? Is it too much or not worth your time to explain in simple terms? It’s like going to a doctors office and they start rambling off technical terms and expect you to understand. How does that make you feel when they do that? Thanks.

If your motor has a bubble back exhaust its hard to access the t-stat housing bolts (PITA=pain in the arse) The Seloc manuals makes a OK substitute for toilet paper when needed....and that NOT a OEM manual, its a Seloc.

tha k you for explaining. How do I know if it’s seloc or OEM? I’m assuming seloc and oem are publishers?

Seloc and Clymer are aftermarket manuals covering various years and all HP's. A OEM (original equipment manufacturer) will only cover that year and HP's. ......and it don't offer "good words" in it explanations. You need a paper manual(link below) as a OEM is not offered in electronic form to my knowledge...

perfect. Thank you. I’ve found an actual service manual now. Waiting for it to come in the mail. Do you know what the C stands for at the end of the model number?

I happen to have a Seloc manual that came with a boat I once had years ago, and yes it is pretty much useless.
The information is not laid out logically, and procedures are explained vaguely, at best.
