78 35hp Johnson 35853R shifting

Having issues setting up motor on boat with shifting. I have replaced water pump months ago.
Always shifted in barrel.
Linkage is short but that's different issue for now.
Right now lower is off trying to check someway to see if there is a way to put linkage back to original?
It will go into forward but with quick force, reverse no issue.
Lot of questions for 1st time 2 stroke owner.
Is there way to check clutch dog with out replacing parts?
Can I just replace it alone?
Just trying to figure what way to go

Yes running
Currently off the boat right now, trying to sort through suggestions on how to reset it to stock or what ever?

Check the gearcase parts diagram for your engine. There isn't really any adjustment, you just need to make sure the screws on the Shift Rod Connector are properly seated in the detents on the upper and lower shift rods.

What do you mean the "linkage is short"? There were two different length lower rods, one for short shaft configuration and another for long shaft. If you are needing a long rod (Part # 0319679) they are unavailable, so you'll have to hit the used market for one of those.

Is the lower shift rod screwed into the lower unit all the way?-----Is the shift adjustment at the top ( behind shift lever ) set up correctly?

Yes all the way. Reinstalled back on motor both in neutral. Goes into forward with lot of effort but won't stay

Take lower unit apart for inspection / repair as needed.----You are sure it is not a bad propeller ?

Pretty sure worked before while back when I was redoing the motor, carbs starter water pump in the barrel. This is 1st time I've tried setting up shifter on boat and motor
