9.9 oil leak

Hi, hoping someone can help and maybe stop me wasting money. Just fired up my old 1980 9.9 which has been in the store for 5 yrs. Hoping to stick it on a little 4m inflatable for costal diving. Started first time , although a little smokey and fast revving at idle but that was due to stuck carb throttle plate. Now I've noticed brown oil leaking from the top of the rear of the extension tube, its a long shaft, and weeping brown oil from the water drain holes when I tilt the engine. Would this be an oil seal on the main shaft maybe? Gear oil is brownish too but thats 8 yrs old. Don't wanna start buying oil seals if its too far gone

Cheers

Are you talking about the 2 exhaust relief holes that are just under the engine? If so, it’s probably just old oil residue in the exhaust that’s come loose and draining out.

No, its coming out of the joint between the extension tube and the leg with the relief holes. Right below the relief holes . almost like a gasket has blown . but because of the water drain holes below it I can't understand where any pressure would build up to blow it out of that joint.
