I am looking for my first boat, and there is a 96 model with a 96 135 HP mariner outboard. The owner says he has not had it out for two years (tag says 04) and when he put it away, he winterized it. What can I expect from a motor that has sat for two years and how would I go about checking for integrity, compression, etc.
I know a new battery is the first thing, but would you hire a mechanic to go out and look it over? I see some mussels and stuff still stuck to the engine mount, so he was not very dilligent in cleaning the boat. Maybe the engine never got flushed? That seems like it could be a big problem.
