Last fall we bought a 2755 Bayliner that had been sitting for a couple of years. I did some work on the trailer over the winter, replaced the carb and did some basic PM. Last weekend we got it on the water and came home with a milkshake in the leg. So I've ordered a new leg and it should be here in a week or so. My question is whether a half-ass wrench puller such as myself is dumb to think he can put seals in my old drive.
I bought the new drive because its got new bearings, new u-joints, new everything and it comes with a warranty, for whatever little that is worth. We paid little enough for the boat that it was an easy decision to spring for the drive but now I'd like to get my old drive in shape so I can keep it for a spare. From what I've read it seems like keeping a spare Alpha 1 for a boat as big as the 2755 is probably a good idea. I do most of my own maintenance and repairs - I wouldn't do an engine rebuild but I've got no problem changing hub seals on my 4x4 or axles on my Towncar. I can read the service manual but I'd have to bastard something to do a pressure test. Should I hire a pro or can I DIY it?
