BF 200 high temp false alarm?

My 2013 BF 200 gets plenty of use, and is regularly maintained. On 2 recent occasions, the high temp alarm has sounded just as I was powering up to get on step. In both instances the engine was cool (less than 160). The first time I shut her down, started back up no problem. Yesterday I just throttled back to idle, alarm stopped, and I was on my way. Could this be a faulty temp sensor? I might just switch out my impeller kit since it s a couple seasons old…. Any other ideas?

Yes, definitely switch out the water pump. And if it has been several seasons, do the entire pump, not just the impeller kit.

Your engine has three heat sensors - one on the top of each exhaust manifold, and one in the block. Any one of the three will cause an overheat alarm.

If you have the four-light key switch panel you can pull codes to find out which one is causing the alarm. Procedure for pulling fault codes is attached. And what the codes mean is also attached. A code 6 is the ECT (Engine Coolant Temperature, i.e. block temperature), code 24 is manifold sensor 1 (starboard side), and code 25 is sensor 2 (port side).

Hi deuxgranouilless,

Being a regular contributor on the forum, you probably already know I don't work on the big v-6 Hondas or know much about them really. Chawk's advice is always well founded so excuse me for piping up.

And, you may already know about what I'm going to point out as well.

Just wanted to say that I've read more than one post here about the BF 200 exhaust manifold/thermostat water hoses getting plugged and causing similar symptoms.

Reference items 7 and 8 in the link.

Good luck.

Thanks JGMO I will take a look at that and report back.

I know Suzuki also has a gradient temperature alarm, if the temperature rises too fast that will trigger an overheat alarm. Wondering if Honda has a similar feature?

Let me reinforce what JGMO wrote about the water lines. Definitely check those. Unless you flush engine after each use by immersing the leg in fresh water, those T-Stats and hoses don't get flushed well, if at all, depending on water pressure.

Thanks Chawk, I removed the water pump yesterday to find it looked fine, but I replaced it anyway. I do flush every 3 weeks or less, and I use a stock tank, so the water flows well. Still I will check out those hoses next time I do T stats.
