BF150 Repeated Stalls/Won’t Start

I’ll try to be clear and as detailed as possible but it’s been a bit of a blur, lots of wrenching and only 3 trips on the water this summer, two of which ended up in a tow back to the mooring. Long story short: BF150 on the back of a 21’ Steiger, engine I believe is a 2019 which I purchased used along with the boat 3-4 years ago. This spring she was running great on hose/muffs in the driveway. Launched her in early July, motored slowly to the do lX picked up some family and about 2 minutes later sputtered/stalled out. First restart attempted almost caught, after that there was nothing. Paddled it pack to the dock, brought home. I removed and rebuilt the VST, tested the fuel pump, made sure there were no obstructions on the fuel lines, threw in some new spark plugs for fun (properly gapped), ran her on the muffs again and she started up great and ran fine. Dropped her back in the water a few weeks later, had one trip of only a few miles out and back to the beach, but just as we neared the mooring field on our return the alarm blared and the engine went into limp mode. Got on the hook, went home, drove my kid to Colorado and put it out of my mind. Yesterday, about two weeks after the alarm/limp mode situation, I start her up with no problems, let her idle for a bit. She seems happy so I again motor slowly out of the mooring field to the channel and as soon as I go to give her just a little more gas she sputters and stalls, just like it did back in July. This time I get towed in and engine is behaving the exact same: turns over but won’t fire up at all. I go out today to swap out with my 15’ whaler with the indestructible 1990 Johnson 2 stroke, and the Honda gives a whimper of life when I try to start her but then nothing after that first try. So she’s back in the driveway and I’m stumped. Next on my own list would be to drain the tank entirely and start with fresh gas but I’m not convinced that’s the issue. Yes, it’s last years gas but the tank was full and gas was treated. Missed the spring run of stripers and hoping not to miss the fall but I’m pulling my hair out over here and beginning to think my boat’s allergic to water. Appreciate any insight/input. Thanks…Josh

Sorry you're having trouble.

Ironically, I too was thinking "allergic to water" when I was reading your post.

Have you taken a look at the water separator? Item 2 in link.


Additoinally, I was wondering how much it rains out on your mooring or where the boat's stored outdoors and uncovered?

If she sits in rain at all, water can find it's way into the tank surprisingly fast. Taking a fuel sample as near the fuel pick up screen at the bottom of the tank might tell a story.

Another option is swapping to a spare portable tank with fresh fuel to see if things improve.
